Infographic – Being a Good Digital Citizen

February 13, 2018 by Douglas Citizen No Comments

This infographic comes from Applied Educational Systems (https://www.aeseducation.com/). I have called it an infographic but you could print it and post it as a poster in your classroom.

The questions it outlines could be a good jumping off point for student discussions on Digital Citizenship.

The AES company has self-paced training modules that can be used by teachers with their students. The courses cover the topics: Health Science, Business Education, Computer Applications, and Career Readiness. As part of the coursework, they have special modules about developing digital citizenship skills.

Poster – Good Digital Parenting

February 12, 2018 by Douglas Citizen No Comments

Today, I would like to share a nice poster that I came across called the 7 Steps to Good Digital Parenting presented by the Family Online Safety Institute (https://www.fosi.org/).

FOSI’s mission statement is “to make the online world safer for kids and their families. FOSI convenes leaders in industry, government and the non-profit sectors to collaborate and innovate new solutions and policies in the field of online safety. Through research, resources, events and special projects, FOSI promotes a culture of responsibility online and encourages a sense of digital citizenship for all.”

The seven steps outlined on the poster are:

  1. Talk with Your Kids
  2. Educate Yourself
  3. Use Parental Controls
  4. Set Ground Rules and Apply Sanctions
  5. Friend and Follow but Don’t Stalk
  6. Explore, Share, and Celebrate
  7. Be a Good Digital Role Model

You can download the poster by clicking on the image above or by clicking here.

The FOSI web site has sections of the site about the FOSI organization, about current policies and the research that is being done, and about good digital parenting. The parenting section has several articles with strategies that parents can try in helping their children become good digital citizens.

Safer Internet Day is February 6th, 2018

February 1, 2018 by Douglas Citizen No Comments

As the title says, “Safer Internet Day is February 6th, 2018”

Create, connect and share respect: A better internet starts with you

Safer Internet Day is international education and awareness-raising effort that aims to not only create a safer internet where everyone is empowered to use technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. In the US, the Safer Internet Day project is hosted by ConnectSafely.org. The international home page is at https://www.saferinternetday.org/web/sid/home. The theme of the day is, as shown above, “Create, connect and share respect: A better internet starts with you”. Everyone is encouraged to join the global movement to make the most of the internet’s potential to bring people together. A big part of this year’s event will be a Live Stream presentation from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. (EST). For more information about the live stream, visit the page at http://saferinternetday.us/livestream/.

The international site has a resource page that offers several different types of resources that can be used by teachers and parents to help their students learn about using the Internet in safe ways. You can search the resources by age, and by language. The image below shows a small clipping of a search which returned a web page about tips for using live streaming. One of the items was an infographic that is partially shown here.

Sources: search page link – https://www.saferinternetday.org/web/sid/resources/gallery – and resource page link – https://www.saferinternet.org.uk/blog/over-1-10-young-people-have-%E2%80%98gone-live%E2%80%99.

After exploring some of the resources on the Safer Internet site, I took a look at the Connect Safely site , and found that they also had some great resources. There were too many for me to mention here but I may write about them in a future post. A few that I found to be very useful were:

  1. their Educator Guides (http://www.connectsafely.org/educatorguides/),
  2. their guides for Parents (http://www.connectsafely.org/guides-3/),
  3. their Media library (http://www.connectsafely.org/media-library/), and
  4. their Video library (http://www.connectsafely.org/video-library/).

Enjoy exploring these resources and raise the awareness at your school.
