Today, I would like to share a nice poster that I came across called the 7 Steps to Good Digital Parenting presented by the Family Online Safety Institute (

FOSI’s mission statement is “to make the online world safer for kids and their families. FOSI convenes leaders in industry, government and the non-profit sectors to collaborate and innovate new solutions and policies in the field of online safety. Through research, resources, events and special projects, FOSI promotes a culture of responsibility online and encourages a sense of digital citizenship for all.”

The seven steps outlined on the poster are:

  1. Talk with Your Kids
  2. Educate Yourself
  3. Use Parental Controls
  4. Set Ground Rules and Apply Sanctions
  5. Friend and Follow but Don’t Stalk
  6. Explore, Share, and Celebrate
  7. Be a Good Digital Role Model

You can download the poster by clicking on the image above or by clicking here.

The FOSI web site has sections of the site about the FOSI organization, about current policies and the research that is being done, and about good digital parenting. The parenting section has several articles with strategies that parents can try in helping their children become good digital citizens.
